History
In 1968, the College of Lake County was initiated by the donation of 181 acres for the construction of a campus. By the fall of 1969, classes began in temporary, pre-fabricated buildings. In December of the same year, a plan was agreed upon for the creation of a permanent campus. An outreach center was opened in 1978 in the nearby community of Waukegan.

The College of Lake County serves a highly populated area, so the school enrolls around 18,000 students seeking college credit each semester. 80% of those students are a part of the transfer track or the career preparation programs. The College of Lake County has received quite a bit of attention for its high quality education system. Not only is it ranked as one of the top 5 colleges in the state of Illinois, but it has also been named as one of the top 100 community colleges in the U.S.
One of the most unique things about the College of Lake County is its effort to go green. Not only has the college achieved cost savings through its green initiative, but it has also created courses that train students in sustainable, eco-friendly practices for the workplace as well as the home. On campus, the College of Lake County strives to conserve energy, water, and building materials. One of the unique aspects of this green movement is that the College of Lake County is now home to a community garden where students can maintain their own garden plot.

Situated in, Grayslake, Illinois, the College of Lake County is in the suburbs northeast of Chicago. The College of Lake County’s district has the third largest population within the community college system in Illinois.
