For every student, the College of Lake County works to provide academic excellence as well as assistance with individual goals. There is a great variety of programs, including transfer or career entry preparation, non-credit courses, adult education, and contract and specialized training courses for businesses.

History

In 1968, the College of Lake County was initiated by the donation of 181 acres for the construction of a campus. By the fall of 1969, classes began in temporary, pre-fabricated buildings. In December of the same year, a plan was agreed upon for the creation of a permanent campus. An outreach center was opened in 1978 in the nearby community of Waukegan.

The College of Lake County serves a highly populated area, so the school enrolls around 18,000 students seeking college credit each semester. 80% of those students are a part of the transfer track or the career preparation programs. One of the unique aspects of this green movement is that the College of Lake County is now home to a community garden where students can maintain their own garden plot.

Kennedy King College is one of seven community colleges within the City Colleges of Chicago. The two-year community college is inspired by the example of its namesakes, Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King. With a strong commitment to academic excellence and civic responsibility, the school has prepared many students to succeed in the workplace.

History

Originally known as Woodrow Wilson Junior College, Kennedy King College was renamed in 1969, just a year after its famous namesakes were assassinated. The first campus was on Wentworth Ave. and offered a gym, daycares, a theater, a radio station, and a library, etc. However, in 2005 the school initiated a renovation that caused the school to be moved to a new location on the south side of Chicago. The new campus features state of the art facilities and a prominent clock tower at the center of campus.

Each year, Kennedy King College welcomes over 14,000 students. In order to maintain academic excellence, however, class sizes are kept to about 25 students per class. Most of these students are recent high school graduates, although the average student age is 28 thanks to the large number of adult attendees. There are many opportunities for adult education and continuing education within the Kennedy King College system.

Many students enroll with a goal of receiving their Associate’s degree and transferring to a four-year college, but Kennedy King College also offers a number of certificate programs that prepare students to immediately enter the workforce. Most of the degree programs are oriented towards landing a good job or achieving an inexpensive degree. One of the primary goals of the City Colleges of Chicago is to equip students with degrees that will actually be valuable to them later in life, whether they are pursuing career goals or a Bachelor’s degree. The seven colleges within the networks are Richard J. Daley College, Malcolm X College, Harry S. Truman College, Wilbur Right College, Kennedy King College, Olive-Harvey College, and Harold Washington College.

History

With a history spanning over 100 years, the City Colleges of Chicago has produced over one million alumni. The first college that would eventually become a part of the City Colleges of Chicago was Crane Junior College, which was established on September 11, 1911. After struggling through the Great Depression and even closing at one point, the City Colleges network was formed in time for the military to utilize the campuses as training grounds during World War II. After the war, City Colleges gained numerous new students through the GI bill. Eventually, the schools within City Colleges were renamed in honor of significant leaders in the African-American Civil Rights movement.

In recent years, the City Colleges of Chicago have implemented innovative solutions to better prepare their students for the workplace. With that in mind, the school announced that it would be creating new partnerships with local businesses in 2012. These companies were asked to offer input into the development of curriculum, teaching methods, and job placement. This move opened up a new realm of opportunities for the school’s students.

The City Colleges of Chicago is the largest community college system in Illinois. Besides the seven college campuses, the school supports seven satellite sites as well as a number of facilities that assist students in practical learning, such as the Washburne Culinary Institute, the Parrot Cage Restaurant, and five Child Development Centers.

History

Founded in 1860, Wheaton College was opened in time for 67 of its male students to be enlisted during the Civil War. The college has supported a co-ed approach since its inception, with the first female student graduating in 1862. Known for its involvement in the abolitionist movement, Wheaton College was recently confirmed to be a stop on the Underground Railroad. Wheaton College also witnessed the Great Chicago Fire, leading students and faculty to drive loads of food into the devastated city.

Throughout its history, Wheaton has focused on developing strong academics that are still influenced by the college’s interdenominational Christian beliefs. These Christian values have attracted some of the most notable Christians of the modern era, including Billy Graham.

Wheaton College’s pillars of college life include attending classes, going to chapel, getting involved in extracurricular activities, and living on campus. Most students who attend Wheaton report that they had a wonderful experience, although they warn that the college is definitely not a good fit for everyone. Students who excel at Wheaton College are committed evangelical Christians who want a rigorous academic education. Expect to experience plenty of challenges and growth.

Some students complain that the majority of students are conservative which means that this is definitely not a party school! Wheaton College has plenty of great opportunities for social activities, but students have to be proactive in order to get involved. Summer programs such as Wheaton in the Holy Lands are essential to the Wheaton experience.

My five and a half years at Columbia College was a great learning experience. It prepared me for many life circumstances that I have endured and has given me focus in my personal endeavors. I enjoyed being on a campus that was within city limits. It gave me a chance to see the city and experience what it had to offer. My time on campus was also a chance to get more involved with my own personal relationship with nature. Commuting gave me time to explore the parks in Chicago and view the lake. When I had time between class, I would often walk around the city toward the lakefront. This was a relaxing and often rewarding adventure. When school was becoming a bit much, I would walk to the lake or around Grant Park and take time to unwind. Now that I have since graduated, I appreciate these times more. Walking around Millenium or Grant Park gave me breaks between class to analyze and become more peaceful with what was happening in my life. When you graduate, things change and your focus shifts toward finding work and paying back student loans. Columbia was a great school, I wish I had more of a connection with the actual campus itself. My time there I met great independent thinkers and made friendships that still last to this day. I personally feel most of Columbia’s efforts go into marketing the school life and not the curriculum’s available. I tend to get more from my undergraduate years as a student exploring my mental capabilities and talent’s, than the latter years where it was driven more on graduation. The courses I took where more in relationship to another person’s work and not developing my own. It was a fair balance between the two, but personally, I would assume as an art school you would put more initiative and pushing students in developing their independent talents and voices in their work. It was also more of a marketing and networking situation. I’m all about connecting with people within my field and abroad, but I would much rather spend time developing my own projects outside of corporate marketing and material benefits. The experiences were all rewarding within the six year period and I would not regret my time. I am more of an independent worker and take more pride in my craft due to my time at Columbia.
